The goal of the course is to stimulate the imagination, unlock creativity and to get people writing something every single day of the course, no matter how large or how small. A popular Swedish children's writer recently explained how, without publishing deadlines, she would be totally lost and would just endlessly write and re-write the same page – even paragraph – even sentence! – again and again. She blessed her deadlines. This course will apply its own mild deadlines too.
Each day will begin with a session of yoga, followed by a creative “warm up”. So both body and mind will be awakened and relaxed, opening the space for the day's creative activities.
Course work will include daily creative assignments, supported by processes, “games”, practical tuition and suggestions. There will also be a regular schedule of short “inspiration sessions”. Each of the participants will be required to lead at least two of these: the goal to inspire the other participants with (a maximum of) five minutes of their writing. These sessions will of course be additional to other sessions in which participants will read their writing to the rest of the group.
The course will also include some “Literature sessions”, in which we will read and discuss some short English texts from English and American literature, texts we believe to be “well written” for whatever reason. Participants are asked to earmark some passages, preferably both old and new, and bring them to the course.
The course will not involve iron-fisted criticism and analysis of the participants' writing. The goal is to encourage and support creativity and the ability to write. The course will also include a “support” session, a chance to share and discuss any problems or obstacles in an attempt to discover solutions and helpful tips.
By “writing” we mean fiction, fact, poetry or drama – the choice is yours.
Come armed with at least one sturdy little notebook (for example, a hard-backed Moleskine or similar) for note taking in sessions and leisure time. Also bring plenty of paper – or a laptop – for your writing assignments. Pens and pencils too of course!
