Vipassana meditation is also known as insight or mindfulness meditation. It is known as such because we use and develop our mindfulness (awareness, attention and observation) to gain insight, wisdom and understanding. The object of our attention is this body and mind, physical and mental processes.
Vipassana uses mindfulness on any mental or physical process that happens naturally in the present. We use our natural state of awareness but then sharpen it to the point where we are no longer using our “ordinary mind”, that is, thinking, judging, criticizing, analyzing, reflecting and projecting, etc. but we use objective awareness, bare attention to simply experience and purely understand the true nature of this body and mind – life. We develop our “extraordinary mind”. We go beyond concepts to see and know the reality and truth of existence.
Thus, our heightened attention is not fixed, it is flexible and we may use it anywhere, anytime, at work, driving, watching TV, when talking and dealing with people, family and relationships and whatever you do in your life.
Our mindfulness leads us to new realizations about life, we see and know things that we never new before, because we weren't aware, we weren't “awake”. Now we can see, understand and reduce our anger, fears, emotions and stress. Wisdom makes peace!
Everyone, all living beings want to live in peace. When we truly understand the nature of this universe and existence, we stop fighting, struggling, trying to make everything the way WE think is should be and we go with the flow, seeing and knowing life as it really is. We become more patient, compassionate, considerate, kind and generous with our time, our love and even our smiles!
Our strong emotions reduce, thinking becomes clear, concentration and mindfulness become more powerful, the body and mind become balanced and harmonious. Ignorance reduces and wisdom increases, life becomes more peaceful and people around us can feel it. Thus peace spreads out to the world from within.
